Six Years Later…

Gemma stood by the lake, the picnic in full swing, the air filled with the sounds of laughter, chatter, and the subtle melodies of nature. As she gazed across the greenery, she took a moment to count her blessings. The sun reflected brilliantly off the calm water, mirroring the light in her eyes. The journey she and Gabriel had embarked on was filled with trials and heartaches, but the treasure they found was each other, and the love they shared was beyond any materialistic riches.

Looking across, she spotted Gabriel playing with their children. Nathan, with his father’s golden eyes, tried to chase after a butterfly while Lilliana, possessing Gemma’s soft curls, giggled while plucking wildflowers. The sight brought a serene smile to Gemma’s face. Despite the adversities they faced, their love blossomed, and they were now reaping its beautiful rewards.

Close by, Felicity and Hugh, deeply engrossed in their world, laughed as they played with their mischievous twin boys. Their love story, paralleling Gemma and Gabriel’s, was another testament to the magic that the Ashbourne Estate held. Felicity’s laughter was infectious, and soon, the entire group found themselves drawn into their joyous world.

Gemma’s eyes then drifted to Vivienne, who had gracefully settled on a blanket, her round belly announcing the imminent arrival of a new member to their close-knit group. Vivienne’s husband, a kind-eyed prosperous merchant, placed a protective hand over her belly, and they exchanged knowing glances, filled with anticipation and love. Despite the tumultuous past shared by Gemma and Vivienne, largely influenced by Cressinda’s malevolent presence, they had slowly mended fences. The death of Cressinda, while tragic, was also liberating for many. The shadows she cast had been replaced by the sunlight of forgiveness and new beginnings.

The serene moment was broken by the unmistakable sound of pages being turned. Gemma’s head snapped towards the source. Gabriel had taken a seat and was surrounded by a group of eager listeners, children and adults alike. She recognized the book instantly, “Gulliver’s Travels,” a book she adored as a child. With a chuckle, she approached the gathering, eager to hear her husband’s rendition.

Clearing his throat, Gabriel began, “I would like to read to you about one intrepid traveler and the magic he found along the way…” His voice was gentle, yet captivating, drawing everyone into the world Jonathan Swift had crafted.

The reading was short but sweet, and as the last words left Gabriel’s lips, the listeners erupted in applause. As the crowd dispersed, Gabriel sought out his wife, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, their bodies fitting perfectly, just as their souls did.

Whispering into her ear, his voice tinged with emotion, he murmured, “I’m so happy my travels led me back to you, my forever love.”

Gemma, turning around to face him, placed a delicate hand on his cheek, “And I am forever grateful for the treasure hunt that brought you back to me.” Their eyes locked, and in that gaze, they traveled through the years, reliving memories, and dreaming of countless more to come.

The Ashbourne Estate, with its picturesque setting, was always a haven for festivities. And today, as the vibrant colors of the picnic blankets contrasted with the lush green of the estate, it was more alive than ever. Birds seemed to sing a bit louder, the wind whispered tales of love and joy, and the lake, with its sparkling waters, stood witness to countless stories of yesteryears.

A soft breeze rustled the trees, causing Felicity’s parents to look up and exchange a fond smile. Their daughter’s happiness was evident, and they were grateful to witness the bonds of friendship and love that surrounded them all.

“You remember when they were all younger, don’t you?” Felicity’s mother mused, looking at her husband. “Who would’ve thought they’d come this far?”

He chuckled, “True, they’ve all matured and faced their own challenges. But look at them now – stronger, wiser, and happier.”

Vivienne, now seated comfortably and sipping on some cool lemonade, beckoned Gemma over. Their relationship, previously strained by the shadows of the past, was now on the mend. Gemma took a seat beside her, their conversation light and filled with the promise of a deeper connection in the future.

“Your children are growing so quickly, Gemma,” Vivienne commented, her eyes trailing Nathan and Lilliana playing nearby.

Gemma smiled, “Yes, they’re a handful, but they’re also our little bundles of joy. And speaking of children, when is your little one due?”

Vivienne placed a hand on her belly, “In a month’s time. We’re eagerly waiting.”

Gemma’s eyes softened, “You’ll be an amazing mother, Vivienne.”

Touched by Gemma’s words, Vivienne’s eyes glistened, “Thank you. And I’m sorry for everything before. The past… it was complicated.”

Gemma squeezed her hand reassuringly, “It’s behind us. We have the present and future to look forward to.”

In another corner, Alastair, along with his heiress wife, watched over their own two children who were engaged in a lively game of tag with Nathan and Lilliana. Their laughter resonated, and it was clear that the next generation of Ashbourne Estate was growing up in a world filled with love, understanding, and unity.

As the day wore on, a soft melody began to play. A local musician, hired for the event, strummed a romantic tune on his guitar. Couples paired off, the open space by the lake transforming into an impromptu dance floor. The world seemed to pause, as love, in all its forms, took center stage.

Amidst this scene, Gabriel approached Gemma, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Care for a dance, my love?” he inquired, offering his hand.

She took it, laughing, “Always.”

As they swayed to the music, the world around them blurred. All that mattered was the rhythm of their hearts, beating in sync, as it always had and always would.

The shadows lengthened, and the sun took on a golden hue, casting a warm glow over the picnic site. Children, tired from their games, began to cluster around their parents, the energy of the day slowly giving way to a serene calmness.

Hugh, holding one of his twin boys, approached Gabriel, a thoughtful expression on his face. “You remember our adventures during that treasure hunt, don’t you?” he began, nostalgia evident in his voice.

Gabriel laughed, “How could I forget? The suspense, the dangers, and the thrill of it all. It was an experience of a lifetime.”

“And to think,” Hugh mused, “it brought you and Gemma closer together. Fate works in mysterious ways.”

“Yes, it does,” Gabriel agreed, his gaze seeking out Gemma, who was engaged in a conversation with Vivienne. “Every twist and turn led me back to her. She’s my greatest treasure.”

Across the lake, the old dower house stood majestically. To many, it was just an architectural beauty, but to Gabriel and Gemma, it was their private haven—a place filled with memories and shared secrets.

Noticing his gaze, Gemma walked over. “Thinking of our special place?” she asked, a soft smile on her face.

Gabriel nodded, “Would you like to sneak away for a bit?”

The invitation was tempting. Their lives, though filled with joy and love, were also hectic with responsibilities. The dower house was their escape—a place where they could be just Gabriel and Gemma, away from the titles and duties.

With a conspiratorial grin, Gemma agreed, “Lead the way.”

As they made their way towards the dower house, Vivienne exchanged a knowing smile with her husband. Their bond was evident to all, a testament to the power of love and second chances. The path to happiness wasn’t always smooth, but with love, understanding, and forgiveness, barriers could be overcome.

Inside the dower house, time seemed to stand still. The soft glow of the candles illuminated the room, and the familiar scent of lavender wafted in the air. This was their sanctuary, untouched by the passing of time.

Gemma looked around, memories flooding back—the times they’d sought refuge here, the secrets they’d shared, and the love they’d deepened. Every corner told a story of their journey together.

“Remember the first time we came here?” she asked, her voice filled with warmth.

Gabriel smiled, drawing her close, “How could I forget? It was the beginning of everything for us.”

Gemma felt her heart race, not only from the brisk walk but also from the intensity in Gabriel’s eyes. The door clicked shut behind them, and the world outside ceased to exist. The room was lit only by the dying sunlight filtering through the window, casting them both in a soft golden hue.

He pulled her close, their faces inches apart, feeling the warmth of their breaths mixing. “Every moment with you feels like a treasure I’ve found,” he murmured, running his fingers down her face, tracing the curve of her lips.

Gemma felt herself getting lost in his eyes, feeling the magnetic pull. Their lips met in a gentle caress before the kiss deepened, fueled by the years of love and passion they shared. Gabriel’s hands roamed her back, pulling her closer, making her feel every inch of him.

She let out a soft moan as his lips traveled down her neck, her hands getting tangled in his hair.

“Gabriel,” she whispered, feeling the world spin. The sensation of being utterly and completely loved was intoxicating.

Pulling back slightly, Gabriel looked into her eyes, searching for permission. Seeing the same longing in her gaze, he lifted her, carrying her to the bedroom.

The soft sheets felt cool against her skin as he laid her down, their eyes never breaking contact. Their clothes seemed like barriers, and with a shared understanding, they began to undress each other, their touches filled with reverence.

Every touch, every caress, was a testament to their deep bond. They moved together in a dance as old as time, a dance of love and connection. Their souls intertwined, and the world outside faded away. All that mattered was this moment, this connection, this love.

The night wrapped around them, and as the moonlight streamed in, it found two souls, spent and content, wrapped in each other’s embrace, their heartbeats in sync.

The soft glow of candles illuminated the room, their flickering light casting shadows that danced gracefully upon the walls of the old dower house. Outside, the world was fading into the embrace of night, but inside, a comforting warmth enveloped the couple.

Gabriel lay beside Gemma, his fingers tracing idle patterns on her bare shoulder, his eyes filled with a mix of contentment and deep love. The serenity of the moment, the profound intimacy they had just shared, only strengthened the bond between them.

Gemma turned to face him, her fingers reaching up to touch his cheek. “Do you ever wonder how different our lives would have been if we hadn’t met that fateful day?”

Gabriel smiled, pulling her closer. “Every choice, every twist and turn led me to you. Even if the paths were different, I believe our souls would have found each other.”

She nestled into his embrace, her head resting on his chest, listening to the rhythmic beat of his heart. “I like to think so too. It feels like destiny.”

They lay in silence for a while, simply enjoying the closeness, the warmth of each other’s company. The old dower house, with its history and memories, seemed to envelop them in a cocoon of love, a testament to their enduring romance.

Gemma’s thoughts wandered to the day’s events, the joyous gathering by the lake, and the happiness that seemed to pervade every corner of the Ashbourne Estate. “You know,” she began, “seeing Vivienne today, pregnant and glowing, it’s a reminder of how life can change. How wounds can heal and new chapters can begin.”

Gabriel nodded, “Yes. Time has a way of mending broken relationships and carving out new paths. I’m glad for her. And for us. We’ve been through so much, but look at us now.”

Gemma sighed, “It’s beautiful, isn’t it? This life we’ve built together.”

“It’s our own fairy tale,” Gabriel whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

As night deepened, the couple lay wrapped in each other’s arms, their hearts full of gratitude for the love they shared and the life they had built together. The Ashbourne Estate, with its rich history and legacy, was now home to a new generation of love stories, and Gabriel and Gemma’s tale was just one among them.

And as the first stars appeared in the night sky, the old dower house stood as a silent witness to the enduring power of love, a beacon of hope and promise for the future.

The story was enjoyable, but the innumerable mistakes in grammar greatly detracted from my enjoyment. Too often the verb tense was used incorrectly. Additionally, Gemma never read Gulliver’s Travels until she was almost twenty-one. She found it the night she couldn’t sleep and was so caught up in it that she didn’t hear Gabriel enter the library. She had read two parts of the book and loved it. Gabriel told her it was one of his favorite childhood books, not the other way around. I really believe that these books are written using AI not a real person. Too much of what is lacks the nuances of the English language. Too many thoughts and emotions are not expressed using words or expressions anyone in America uses. I wish you were real, but a real person would never publish work filled with so many errors, too many of them aren’t believable. What author forgets their character’s life experiences if she wrote them? No author would commit such a heinous mistake. Too many times the wrong pronoun was used he for she and vice versa.

I will continue to read “Meghan Sloan” but the duplicitous is disgusting.

Thank you for your honest feedback, dear Kimberly! I already know there is an issue with the proofreaders and my team does its best to deal with the issue.

Mary

Overall this book had a nice storyline. However, it did not seems the level of an older Meghan Sloan book. Gabriel’s character seemed shallow with his hot and cold indecision. Vivienne’s mother was not really a believable character. Appreciate you as a writer. Blessings.

Thank you so much for your honest feedback, dear Mary! I truly appreciate it!

Pat

Just to be different, I enjoyed this book! The hurt that we might suffer when young stays with us forever. If we are very lucky we meet another person who, with his/her own problems overcome, can finally begin to trust again. Thank you Meghan!

Enjoyed the story, thankfully typos were minimal. Gabriel is pretty much an idiot. Oddly, there was no mention of Gemma’s father’s infidelity. Gemma felt her parents had a loving marriage, rather shocking to find out his unfaithfulness led to his & Gemma’s mother’s death yet not mentioned at all! The extended epilogue seemed as if written by someone else: someone who couldn’t remember how to spell Cressida’s name, forgot how much Gabriel held Alistair in contempt, (justifiably), forgot that Gabriel read Gulliver is Travels as a child, not Gemma. Nonetheless, entertaining tidbit for a few hours.
